What makes cookies so appetizing is how they look like when done. Finishing a cookie doesn't have to be a hard task. In fact almost anyone can learn the skill on how to decorate cookies. What you must do is pick a recipe that has little leavening and makes a rather flat cookie instead of puffy one. Using a flat cookie is much easier to decorate and look better when done. Then the next things to do are cut out and bake your cookies. After baking let them cool thoroughly in a wire rack before you mix the colors and frosting. Don't mix icings in advance because the icing will crust or dry out.
After the cookies have cooled mix the cookie icing. Separate the mixture into small bowls before adding the color. The amounts to be used will depend on the color that will be used greatly. Avoid allowing it to stand or uncovered, because mixtures of icings dry up easily. Use a damp paper towel to cover it. Set aside a white color in case you'll need to correct a color.
Now fill parchment cones for each color to be used. Set them on a tall glass with a damp piece of paper towel in the bottom of each and then put your parchment cones on the glass with tips resting on the paper towel to avoid clogging. You can start decorating your cookies now.
Another way to decorate a cookie is by the use of melted chocolate. You can dip half of your cookie in the chocolate then sprinkle with nuts or colored sugars or dip the entire cookie in it.
